Harald Ironward — a broad, soot-marked blacksmith painted in ink, holding a shield set with a glowing ruby

The smith of Tidewatch

Harald Ironward

Armor Bulwark

“Hit me. See what it gets you.”

Armor that stacks and never heals. Minions that retaliate against everything that touches them. Weapons your own hands swing. Harald doesn't chase the fight — he outlasts it, and makes every blow against him cost two.

The story

The sack he forgot to give back

Harald grew up in a family of smiths in Tidewatch Village, a fishing village on the southern coast of Ambryx. The work was honest and the days were the same: fire, hammer, salt air.

That changed at the harbor. A merchant in a black hooded cloak dropped a sack and kept walking, unaware. Harald didn't chase after him to return it. He took it. Inside was a single large ruby.

A lesser man would have sold it. Harald, a smith, forged it into the center of a shield. The ruby answered — and through that shield his power awoke. He never saw the merchant's face. He doesn't know who the man was, or where the ruby truly came from. He has decided not to wonder about it out loud.

When the power came, Harald cut ties with his family and the village — not out of shame, but out of calculation. Whoever lost the ruby may come looking, and the people closest to him are the ones who'd pay for it. So he keeps his distance. It isn't guilt. It's the coldest, most practical kind of love: he protects Tidewatch by never going back. He guards it from somewhere it can't see him.

The shield

Not a gift. A thing he hammered into being.

The ruby-set shield is his weapon, his armor, and the source of everything he can do. He built it himself — the iron, the rivets, the setting; that much no one handed him. What woke inside it is another matter. He'll tell you the ruby chose the shield and he only held it, and he isn't being modest — it is the truest thing he says, and he does not know how true. Every blow it takes only makes the man behind it harder to break.

He speaks rarely, and when he does, it cuts. He isn't cruel — he's economical. He'd rather let a silence do the talking. When silence won't, he says the one thing that lands.

“Did I steal the sack? No. I just forgot to give it back.” — Harald, ending that conversation

The voice

Heard in the Glade

Quiet. Calm. Hard to move. A man of very few words with a dark, dry edge — he never wastes a sentence, and never explains himself to people who haven't earned it.

  • Greeting“Hit me. See what it gets you.”
  • On the ruby“The ruby chose the shield. I only held it.”
  • On home“I stay away from Tidewatch. Keeps them breathing.”
  • Taking a blow“Steel remembers every blow. So do I.”
  • On conversation“I don't talk much. Saves the breath for the hammer.”

In the Glade

How Harald fights

He did not go looking for the Gloaming Glade. Awakened power draws awakened power — that is the stones' one law — and Harald is the only one of them who understands that the fighting was never his own idea. He goes anyway. His coldest act of love turns out to have worked: whatever comes for the ruby finds him in a clearing on no map, and never finds Tidewatch at all.
